Not in the Cards — Fishermen fall by 1 in opener

A late scoring drive by the Winlock Cardinals, coming off a key defensive stop after Ilwaco went for a 4th and 5 on the 50 yard line gave the visiting Cardinals a come from behind 28-27 win — the win broke a 10 gaming losing streak for the team that began last season.
With only 40 seconds left, the Cardinals ran a successful running play from the Ilwaco 10 yard line for the touchdown and the tie. The PAT put the Cardinals on top for good. Running back Mike Ayon ran for all four Cardinals TDs, as well as 201 rushing yards.
Winlock led at halftime 15-14, but the Fishermen were able to add two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 27-16 lead.

Ilwaco is now 0-1 on the new season and next Friday travels to South Bend for another non-conference game.
