Naselle player post - Comets: Coming Together On and Off the Field

On August 19 football officially started in Naselle, but through out the summer players were in the weight room, running, and thinking of the Dome. Coach Eaton said that the weight room enthusiasm was the best he'd ever seen. The lifting shows the devotion the team has this year. No one on the team can forget the turf of the Dome, and everyone wants to feel that green goodness at least once more. Of course that means making the playoffs. South Bend, Valley, and North Beach are all formidable foes. We are really focusing on league wins and making the playoffs. Once you are there anything can happen, as they all say.
So far practices are going great and team is shapening up. We lost several seniors last year, but as always the next generation is eager to show everyone what they got. Last year RBs Nick Hines and Tony Fletcher will be replaced by highly capable seniors Nathan Carlson and Logan Scrabeck. The line: Manuel Lopez (the only senior), Seth Scrabeck, Nick Zimmerman, Jesse Kimball, and Ryley Queener, is sophomore dominant and is growing up fast. Jesus Martinez and Leonel Mendoza will be hot targets for veteran QB Austin Burkhalter, and Alan Erickson will continue to be the diesel at FB. Defensively, Logan and Jesus will be corners, backed by Austin at safety. Leo, Seth, Alan, and Ian Fauver will fill the LB positions, behind Nathan Carlson and Robert Eaton at nose tackles, and Manuel and Nick Z at DE.
After all the doubles, the agility drills, and the individual drills of the '09 summer camp the team went to Hunter's Inn to enjoy being a team off the gridiron. As the pool tables bustled, the "whoops" of victory and the "AHH"s of defeat filled the air. Hunter's did a great job with the burgers. The one pound Beltbuster burger was the most popular choice, consumed by a third of the team. Hopefully that extra weight falls off by the season opener against Wahkiakum.
