ILWACO - Naselle came out with a punishing running attack in the first half and allowed Ilwaco past mid-field only once in the first two periods on the way to a 24-0 non-league victory at Peterson Field in the season-opener for both teams Friday.
A steady drizzle coupled with opening-night jitters led to a total of nine turnovers, all on lost fumbles, as both teams squandered opportunities to score. A combined 13 penalties for 80 yards also hamstrung both squads. Naselle's Leo Mendoza rambled for 115 yards in 11 carries, Robert Eaton gained 80 yards in 13 totes, and Dustin Eaton gained 53 yards in 11 tries from his quarterback position.
Kai Leach scored two touchdowns and gained 48 yards in eight carries. Josh Berteaux led the Fishermen with 43 yards gained in 14 carries. The Comets out-gained the Fishermen in total offense 324 to 60 and had 18 first downs to five for Ilwaco.
Robert Eaton scored a safety with a tackle in the end zone and he and Ryley Queener each had nine tackles to lead Naselle and Dylan Short led the Fishermen with 10 tackles.
