Last night was a defensive battle with the score showing 7-0 in favor of Valley. Both defenses bended but didn't break for the majority of the game. While it was a disappointing loss, our team is not discouraged as Valley is ranked 7th in the state. Valley was able to crack our defense before we were able to crack theirs for the one score of the game.
After the game the coaches said that this definitely wasn't the end of our season and we could still reach our goal of making the playoffs. We all believe we have what it takes to make it to the playoffs and more.
On a personal note, my shoulder dislocated again towards the end of the second quarter. My Dad was able to get it back into place and my football career remains in question at this time. My brother Austin did a great job filling in for me at quarterback.

NHS football: Comets Put Up a Good Fight
Last night's game was one that came down to a single play. Unforunatly, the Willapa Vikings had that one play. It came early in the fourth quarter on a 4th and 6 situation. Valley QB, Josh Mayfield, threw a risky pass that went just inches over Austin Burkhalter's outstretched arms for a 18 yard touchdown. Give credit to the Vikings, though, they were able to score. We made it deep into Valley territory three times but couldn't muster a paydirt experience. It was a hard fought battle until the end and either team could've came out with the victory.
Even though we lost, it is definitely not the end of our season. Next week we take on Northwest Christian and are ready to make our stand. We, as a team, belive we can still make it to the playoffs and we're ready to do whatever it takes to get there. On Friday night we lost to the number 7 team by a single play and that is the best Naselle has done in many years. We are ready for every other battle there is to come.

Comets show mettle, drop heartbreaker to Vikings, 7-0

Though their coaches encouraged them not to hang their heads following Friday night's game, it had to have been a little bit hard for Alan Erickson and his Naselle Comets teammates. For three quarters they faught the state-ranked Willapa Valley Vikings to a 0-0 tie, only giving up one score at the start of the fourth quarter. In a see-saw battle, the Comets showed their mettle, but just didn't have enough to get into the endzone this week.

The Comets stuck to a running attack with Erickson and Tony Fletcher, above, that early on in the game was gaining large chunks of real estate for the Comets. However, the Viking defense figured out their plan and became much more stout in the second half, limiting the Comet offense's effectiveness.

Turnovers and interceptions were a major factor in the game as both teams had their share. Here, Valley's Josh Mayfield comes down with an interception of a Kyle Burkhalter pass to his brother Austin. Austin would later pick off an interception of his own during a Vikings drive, returning the ball deep into Viking territory.

Austin also took the helm at QB for the Comets, as his brother Kyle once again suffered a seperated shoulder at the end of the first half. Austin led the Comets on their best drive, coming within field goal range, only to have the snap go awry, turning over the ball to the Vikings.

Week 5 preview - 9/28/07
Naselle vs. Willapa Valley, 7 p.m. @ NHS
Tonight is a HUGE night for the Naselle Comets. Facing off against the state-ranked Willapa Valley Vikings will be the biggest test they've seen so far. The Comets are a perfect 3-0 going into the game after traveling to Raymond last week and beating up on the Gulls, 28-13.
And while the Raymond win was big, getting a W against Willapa Valley could prove a little tougher. NHS does have the home field advantage, but the Vikings are coming in on a roll. They are 3-1 on the season, having lost their first game to Rochester, 6-7. They have since blown out three teams — @ Ilwaco 28-8, Concrete 41-7 and @ Ocosta 49-0.
The Comets are off to their best start in who knows how long — a very long time — and a win tonight could set them on course that maybe playoff bound. They will be at full strength with the majority if not all their missing players back in action.
Ilwaco @ LaCenter, 7 p.m.
After last week's debacle at Ridgefield (a 56-12 loss), the Ilwaco Fishermen are reeling, and may be lost at sea for the season, especially if they lose tonight at LaCenter. The Fishermen are 1-3 on the season, having lost 3 straight games.
The LaCenter Wildcats come into the game 2-2, but won their last two games in impressive fashion. Despite their .500 record the Wildcats have scord 147 points while only allowing 85 by their opponents. On the flip side, Ilwaco has given up points at a 2-to-1 rate, having scored 53 while giving up 149. If the Fishermen are going to keep up with the Cats they need to find their offense, and fast — Ilwaco is averaging just over 12 points per game while the Cats are averaging almost 38 per game.
Check back Tonight around midnite for photos from the NHS-Valley game and check back Saturday morning for recap blogs from players.
** There was no blog from the IHS game last week due to a travel conflict where injured players were not allowed to travel with the team to Ridgefield. Dan Beirle, the IHS blogger, is currently sidelined with an injury though hopes to be able to play the last few games of his senior year.

Comets roll
For the first in many years the Comets defeated the Raymond Seagulls last night 28-13. With the addition of Tony Fletcher, Ollie Baker, and my brother Kyle back from a first game injury, we were able to rack up 28 points in the first half. Tony Fletcher was running wild with big yardage plays and a punt return for a touchdown. Kyle's passing game was on target as I caught a few long passes and Gabe See caught one for a TD.
Right before half time Raymond was able to return a punt for a touchdown as we had only 10 guys on the field due to miscommunication.
The second half we were able to drive the ball but were unable to punch it in for a touchdown. Raymond scored in the third quarter but we were able to stop them from getting any closer.
This coming week we will be preparing for the Valley Vikings, who are ranked seventh in the state.

Week 4 preview - 9/21/07
Ilwaco @ Ridgefield, 7 p.m.
Last year, in their week 4 showdown with the Ridgefield Spudders, Ilwaco held a 14-0 lead just minutes into the third quarter. But three key turnovers cost the Fishermen as they proceeded to give up 19 straight points en route to a 19-14 loss. It was the fourth straight loss to start the season.
This year the two teams will face off with identical 1-2 records, with Ridgefield losing at home last week 28-6 to Lyndon Christian and the Fishermen also losing at home, 35-12 to Rochester. Ridgefield's lone victory came in a shootout with LaCenter, 43-36 in week 2.
Naselle @ Raymond, 7 p.m.
Turnovers also cost NHS as they lost to Raymond at home, 22-6 last year. However, The Gulls are winless so far this year and Naselle is a perfect 2-0 and getting starting quarterback Kyle Burkhalter back this week, as well as possibily some other players that have yet to play this year. Naselle is also coming off a bye last week, whereas Raymond lost to Faith Christian in Seattle in week 3.
Check back in Saturday monring for blog entries from both games.

Ilwacos upset loss
Do you believe in miracles? Well last year Rochester pulled a rabbit out of thier hat and layed a whooping on a better Ilwaco squad. I'll give em' credit, Rochester can throw the ball and their running game ain't so bad either. But our boys are better athlets. Last night we made our fare share of big plays. Our defense... has got some work to do but we came up with som big stops last night. There were a few missed chances such as dropping a potential interception but I feel we're getting better every week and we will get the kinks worked out. There isn't much else to say, we're headed to Ridgfield next week, after all mashed spuds is a Fishermens favorite meal.

Fishermen filletted
The Ilwaco Fishermen were in too deep Friday night as they opened the Trico League portion of their schedule with a 35-12 loss to the Warriors of Rochester.

Down with a halftime defeicit of 28-0, James Schneider and his Ilwaco teammates listen to a halftime address from their coach Kevin McNulty.

Things started out positive enough, as Jake Nesbitt, who would see his time at quarterback limited on the night, made a tackle of Logan McFarland on the opening kickoff. Rochester proved unstoppable in the first half, building a four touchdown lead by halftime.

The second half wasn't much better for the Fishermen, as Warriors quarterback Jarin Ruiz ran free most of the night, gaining large chunks of yardage and touchdowns, a total of four scores on the night.

Preview for week three, 9/14
Tonight is going to be a make or break night for the Ilwaco Fishermen football team as they face off against their first Trico League opponent of the year, Rochester. After winning in overtime on the road in week 1 and losing bad at home in week 2 (both against 2B level schools), tonight's game could set the pace for the rest of Ilwaco's season.
Last year Rochester rolled the Fishermen's boat, pounding them 41-20 at Rochester. The Warriors racked up nearly 450 total yards of offensive in a game that saw four turnovers and poor defense by Ilwaco.
However, the Warriors of this year don't seem to be the same as last, as they've had their share of difficulties thus far. They sqeeked out a 7-6 win over WIllapa Valley in week 1 and lost to Woodland last week 34-6. According to articles written by the Centralia Chronicle, Rochester's run defense is a liability, something that senior running back Eddie Knick could take advantage of. After a slow start, Knick ran for over 100 yards last week. Knick ran for 166 yards against the Warriors in last season's game.
The Naselle Comets have a rare bye week this Friday, and play at Raymond next Friday, Sept. 21, after opening their season 2-0 at home. The Comets are expected to have senior starting quarterback Kyle Burkhalter back on the field for the game. His brother Austin helped lead them to victory last week in his first game under center, thanks in large part to a huge game by senior full back Alan Erickson, who ran for 140 yards.
Check back tonight after the game (around 11 pm) to see photos from tonights big game, and check back Saturday to find a players recap of the tilt.

Short, and not so sweet....
Well, sad to say, Ilwaco lost its first home game.
My teammates and myself feel that we didn't play as a team. We will come back next Monday, fix all of our mistakes and prepare physically and mentally.

2 and 0 BABY!!!
For the first time in a long time the comets are 2 and 0. Running behind our veteran offensive line we ran for 346 big ones and 4 offensive touchdowns. Alan Erickson had a huge game rushing for 140 yards and a TD followed by Logan Scrabeck who was about 16 yards short of running his weight with 104 yards and a score. My brother Austin had to play QB because of my injury and now I'm hoping I still have a job! He played great.
On the other side of the ball we once again dominated the line of scrimmage, allowing
the eagles to rush for only 10 yards in the game. But the icing on the cake was when Nathan Carlson caused a fumble and big Mike Shirely picked it up and rumbled his way to the end zone.[I think he's still trying to catch his breath!]
And that was it, final score 32-12.Next up is Raymond after our bye week in which I will be able to play thankfully. It was hard to watch those guys out there while I had to play cheerleader.

Pix from IHS loss to Valley, 28-8
What started out with much hope after last weeks thrilling overtime win at Wahkiakum, ended with disappointment for the Ilwaco Fishermen Friday night as they lost their home opener 28-8 to 2B powerhouse Willapa Valley.

Ilwaco's Kolby Kirby can do nothing but watch after missing a tackle as Valley's Andrew Johnson takes a fumbled punt snap down the sideline to a near score in the first quarter of Friday's game. The Vikings would score a few plays later in the drive.

Trying to make something happen in the fourth quarter, the Fishermen attempt a halfback pass play. But Ilwaco's Justin Short had the ball knocked away right as he was making the pass attempt.

Ilwaco's Eddie Knick found running lanes a hard thing to come by against a stifling Vikings defense, rather looking like a pinball most the night as he was banged around by their defensive line.

As the fourtrh quarter wore down, starting quarterback Jake Nesbitt, #1, and wide receiver Jordan DeSimone, #12, could do nothing but watch the minutes tick away from the sidelines.

This week's match-up's
Tonight, Friday Sept. 7, Ilwaco will host Willapa Valley, while Naselle takes on Evergreen Lutheran.
It wil be a replay of sorts for the second week in a row, as Ilwaco will play the same team they did in week 2 last season, Willapa Valley. Last fall, The Vikings took advantage of five turnovers and a slew of Fishermen penalties to win 10-0. This year the Fishermen will have them at home, in their first game in front of the home fans. The Fishermen took revenge on the team that defeated them in week 1 of last season by beating 2B powerhouse Wahkiakum 21-20 in overtime last week. The Vikings, who went 10-1 last year, lost their season opener last week.
The Comets hope to continue to grow as a team as they shoot for their second straight win of the year as they host Evergreen Lutheran Eagles tonight. Naselle has never played the Eagles, because Evergreen Lutheran has never had a football team — until this season. While the Comets won their season opener last week, 22-14 against Vancouver Christian, the Eagles lost their season opener on the road against Christian Faith High School in Federal Way, 32-10.
“You can’t take anything for granted,” Eagles coach Jeff Kurbis said in the Tacoma News Tribune as camp opened. “You are basically going back to the beginning, starting from what a three-point stance is. To me it’s great. For every coach that has been in it for a while, it’s the fundamentals that get lost. And I can start from the basics because all of them have never done it before.”
Naselle will be playing without their starting quarterback Kyle Burkhalter, who suffered a seperated shoulder last week. He will be replaced under center by his youner brother Austin. But the Comets will have at least some of the nine players that didn't suit up last week (due to injury or ineligibility) back on the field.

Wahkiakum vs Ilwaco
we won our game 21 to 20 going into overtime a second year in a row , it was pretty sweet to beat them at their own feild , ha payback sucks doesn't it? be sure to remember what happens when Daniel Beierle lines over your center, he gets stepped aside and i give your quarter backs numbers a little talk with my helmet.
1st quarter was 8 - nothin. We got our touch down and ran the ball in for an extra 2pts. They got a touch down, kicking the extra pt to make it 8 to 7 but we answered back with another of our own making it 14 to 7 in the 1st half. High intensity in the locker room, coach reminded us how hard we worked to get in condition and we were ready to go out and take the game. 3rd quarter was grinding without much action. They made a touch down tying the game 14 - 14. 4th and final quarter no one scored and we went into overtime. Ilwaco had the first possession of the ball, immediately completed a pass by Jake Nesbitt to Matt Kaino and took it in for the touchdown. We kicked the extra point making it 21 - 14. Wahkiakum then had the ball, made a touch down and ran for the 2pt conversion to win but we shut them out on the 3 yard line. Whew, close one.

Victory proves Comets can persevere
After recieving mutiple injuries and at one time only having 14 players able to play one would think the comets would fade like they have in the past, but we are not the comets of previous seasons.
Our first drive started deep in Vancouver territory. We were able to march down the field, firing on all cylinders. Our line was making a big push to create large holes which made running the ball like driving a Mack truck down the freeway. I made a short scamper for a TD and my brother ran in the 2 point conversion. 8 - 0.
Our defense came out strong and caused them to gain negative yards in the first half. The defensive line did a great job pushing their offensive line backwards.
We added to our score in the 2nd quarter with a QB sneak. A two point conversion pass to Gabriel See made the score 16 - 0.
Unfortunately towards the end of the 2nd quarter I dislocated my shoulder and had to leave the game. This shoulder has been a problem for me my entire high school career. I have dislocated it 6 times. I had surgery on it March 2006. Time will tell if it is a season ending injury. I sure hope not. Mike Shirley, our center, hurt his knee right before halftime. Fortunately he was able to get back in the game and play offense the 2nd half.
My brother Austin had to take over at QB and did a very good job. We were a little deflated at the start of the 2nd half giving up 2 touchdowns and a 2 point conversion. 16 - 14 after 3 quarters.
Our guys were able to pull it together the 4th quarter. Austin made a great pass to Alan Erickson who rumbled into the endzone. Extra point failed. 22 - 16.
The fourth quarter brought injuries to Jesus Martinez, who prior to getting hurt had a huge run for a critical first down. Jason Gradt and Alan had to leave the game for a few plays due to cramped muscles. This forced new guys into unfamiliar positions. Everyone stepped up and we were able to keep Vancouver from scoring and held on for the win.
Jason anchored the offensive and defensive line and Alan showed great leadership skills. After the game Coach Eaton said that in previous seasons we would have just given up after our injuries. He said he was extremely proud of us for perservering and stepping up and getting the job done.
